Chancellor’s Professor Named American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow

Hamid Jafarkhani is one of four UCI professors named AAAS Fellow

Chancellor’s Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Hamid Jafarkhani, Ph.D., is one of four UC Irvine professors recently elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Jafarkhani will be honored, along with over 500 members of the organization, in recognition of distinguished contributions to his field. AAAS, the world's largest general scientific society, elects Fellows in a wide cross-section of fields, including agriculture, astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics and engineering.

Jafarkhani’s research focuses on communications theory, with an emphasis on coding. He is one of the inventors of space-time block coding, which is widely used to improve wireless transmission quality.

Jafarkhani, one of 16 new Fellows elected to the Section on Information, Computing and Communications, will receive official recognition at the 2011 AAAS annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in February.
