Academic Senates Bestows Distinguished Award to Professor Steinert

In recognition of his outstanding teaching

The Irvine division of the University of California Academic Senate awarded Roger F. Steinert, M.D., professor of ophthalmology and biomedical engineering, and chair of clinical ophthalmology, a prestigious 2008-2009 Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching in honor of his outstanding contributions in teaching.

Dr. Steinert, who is internationally recognized for his research and clinical expertise in the fields of cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and refractive surgery, participated in the Academic Senate’s evening of distinguished faculty lectures on Oct. 14, and presented “Lasers and the Eye: Diagnosing and Treating with Light.”

He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, having graduated summa cum laude from Harvard, and served his residency at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In his current position at UC Irvine, Dr. Steinert, who is also the director of cornea, refractive, and cataract surgery, combines a consultative practice in cataract, refractive, and corneal surgery with teaching and translational laboratory research in these fields. He has authored or co-authored four textbooks, including Cataract Surgery, which is in its second edition, and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal scientific articles and more than 60 book chapters. He serves on the editorial boards of Ophthalmology, the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Journal of Refractive Surgery, and Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers, and Imaging.

Dr. Steinert serves as medical monitor of several FDA trials, and holds seven U.S. and numerous international patents. He has received the Senior Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has been selected by his peers for inclusion in every edition of Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Doctors. Ophthalmology Times named him one of the top 100 ophthalmologists in North America, and he has biographical listings in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. He is a member of the executive committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and is currently president of that society.
