UCI to Celebrate National Engineers Week

Weeklong activities begin Feb. 21, 2006

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine invites students, faculty, alumni and members of the public to attend the campus’s 33rd celebration of National Engineers Week, or E-Week, Feb. 21-25, 2006. Established in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, E-Week is an annual event aimed at increasing public awareness and appreciation for the engineering profession.

The weeklong event provides an avenue for students to demonstrate innovation and imagination through a variety of events. Highlighting the festivities is a series of competitions aimed at allowing students to demonstrate innovation and creativity. Some of the contests include:

  • Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition: (Feb. 21, 1 - 3 p.m., location: Engineering Laboratory Facility Structures Lab, ELF 148) builders fabricate a Popsicle-stick bridge to support an applied load.
  • Egg Drop: (Feb. 23, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., location: Engineering Tower) participants construct a package that will protect eggs dropped from a 10-story tower.
  • Rube Goldberg Competition: (Feb. 23, 11:30 - 12:30 p.m., location: McDonnell Douglas Engineering Auditorium) students create a complex contraption to perform a simple task.
  • RC Car Battle: (Feb. 23, noon – 1 p.m., location: Engineering Plaza) each driver is given an RC car that they must properly prepare for a head-to-head match with another driver.
  • Catapult Competition: (Feb. 23, 1:30 – 2 p.m., location: Engineering Plaza) designers must create a device to toss, propel, kick or fling a beanbag as far as possible.
  • Paper Airplane Contest: (Feb. 23, 2 - 3 p.m., location: Engineering Gateway stairs) students design and build a paper airplane that will travel the farthest possible distance.

Additional E-Week activities include the EngiTECH Technical Career Fair held on Feb. 22, sponsored by more than 20 local companies; high school shadow day; kite festival; faculty/student softball game; and awards banquet.  Further information about E-week can be found at: http://esc.eng.uci.edu
