ENGR 195 — A new course is being offered this spring by The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. The course, The Northrop Grumman Entrepreneurship Course for Scientists and Engineers, aims to introduce and familiarize science and engineering students with the theory and practice of entrepreneurship.
The course will also introduce the concept of intrapreneurship: entrepreneurship within large corporations. Through a blend of lecture, case study, and experiential learning (presentations by invited industry leaders, and individual and group assignments), students will explore the various organizational, strategic and financial challenges faced by successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs as they attempt to create and appropriate value from commercializing their innovations. The course will be primarily a practicum, leading to the construction of a commercially viable business plan.
Thus far, confirmed speakers include:
Henry Samueli, Ph.D., co-founder, chairman of the board of directors and chief technical officer of Broadcom Corporation, a leading provider of highly integrated silicon solutions that enable broadband communications and networking of voice, video and data services
Henry T. Nicholas, III, Ph.D., co-founder and former CEO of Broadcom Corporation, a leading provider of highly integrated silicon solutions that enable broadband communications and networking of voice, video and data services
William J. Link, Ph.D., managing director of Versant Ventures, a healthcare venture capital investment firm with over $650 million in committed capital
Robert A. Kleist, B.S.E.E., M.S.E.E., founding partner, president, director and CEO of Printronix, Inc., a global and leading provider of industrial and back-office enterprise printing solutions
Due to the presence of group exercises, class enrollment will be limited to 40 students.
Pre-requisite: Junior, senior, or graduate status in a scientific or engineering discipline
Instructor: Iraj Daizadeh, PhD, MBA, Director, Wilson, Magnuson and Associates, LLC
