Engineering Graduate Students Receive ARCS Scholarships

Two engineering graduate students, R. Peter Dillon and Jeremy L. Emken, have been named 2003-04 ARCS Foundation Scholars by the Orange County chapter of the ARCS Foundation, Inc. The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) organization is dedicated to helping the brightest U.S. science and engineering students by providing $10,000 scholarships.

Dillon, whose advisor is Martha Mecartney, professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, is investigating ways to engineer ceramics for plasticity. Emken, whose advisor is David Reinkensmeyer, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is studying biomedical engineering of neural control. Both students received the awards during a scholarship awards dinner held on November 21, 2003.

The Orange County chapter of the ARCS Foundation, one of 12 chapters nationwide, awarded a total of $112,500 to 10 ARCS Scholars during the academic year 2003 - 2004. Since its beginning in June 1999, ARCS Orange County has awarded $362,500 to graduate students in science and engineering at the University of California, Irvine.
