For the journal cover, Suh edited an SEM image of the colloidal self-assembly process to resemble a canyon with a river flowing through it. “The valley represents the in-situ grain boundary formation. The valley is smoking, which portrays the evaporation phenomenon occurring in these structures. And the stars represent fluorescent particles. This is very similar to what is occurring as cracks form during self-assembly,” he said.
