CEE Seminar: Building Connections, Leaving Impact, Pioneering Innovation in Water through Vision and AI
President & Principal Engineer, Founder
APEX Environmental & Water Resources
Fullerton, CA
Abstract: In my humble view, life is all about the connections we build and the impact we leave behind. Reflecting on my journey, I share how the support of my family, mentors and peers enabled me to thrive - beginning with my formative years, the opportunity to join Russ Detwiler’s lab at UC Irvine, and the doors opened by Mohsen Mehran in my early professional career. Each connection shaped my path, from launching my own company, APEX Environmental & Water Resources, to pioneering groundbreaking advancements in the water industry - APEX is the leading company that consults water utilities like Orange County Water District in adopting technology and AI tools. This seminar will weave together personal experiences and professional milestones to illustrate the profound influence of human connections on innovation, collaboration and community impact. I will also explore the transformative role of technology and data science in the water industry, where trends like digital twins and AI are redefining an industry once resistant to change. In this landscape, our roles are evolving from problem solvers to problem definers, and we as humans, must focus on dreaming, creating and imagining the future, while leveraging machines to handle repetitive, mundane and hazardous tasks. Together we are shaping a more connected, sustainable world.
