Abstract: A variety of electrochemical interfaces are seen as critical in addressing future expectations in energy conversion and storage technologies. An overview of research that has been focused on fundamental properties of electrified interfaces will be presented. Particularly, the case studies that enable insight into physicochemical descriptors at atomic scale, which are responsible for the course of reaction, kinetics and charge transfer will be thoroughly discussed. Ability to define and control fundamental properties such as surface and subsurface chemical composition and structure, including interactions with molecular species from the double layer, is essential in order to reveal bond-breaking and bond-making processes of any electrochemical reaction.  It will also be demonstrated how acquired fundamental knowledge is guiding the synthesis of advanced materials for electrochemical applications.

Bio: Vojislav Stamenkovic is a senior scientist and group leader at Argonne National Laboratory.  He earned his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Belgrade in 2001, after spending three years as a visiting scientist at the University of California Berkeley.  Afterward, he was a postdoctoral and staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory before he moved to Argonne in 2006, where he is conducting multidisciplinary research related to materials for electrochemical applications such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries.  Stamenkovic received a number of awards for his work including a recognition award from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Distinguished Performance Award from the University of Chicago and the U.S. DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Award.

He has published over 150 articles and book chapters for which he received over 30,000 citations with an h-index of 71.  He gave over 200 presentations and has beenan invited plenary and keynote speaker at major conferences, symposia and seminars more than 100 times.

Stamenkovic was named a Highly Cited Researcher in 2018, which ranks him in the top 1% of researchers worldwide by citations in 21 fields of sciences, based on the Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics).
