Internet trolls flooded UC Irvine chat groups with gore. Then students mounted a counterattack
Because Discord is a public-facing, non-university platform, there was very little user verification prior to the attacks, [said] Alina Kim, an independent manager for UC Irvine’s student-run communities on Discord. … Biomedical engineering student Vietbao Tran then went on the offensive, creating a Discord bot that automatically banned those IDs before channel moderators could. The bot eventually was used to protect the 98 largest servers, according to Kim. “It was an incredible response because he worked through the course of 24 hours and it was so incredibly helpful,” Kim said.

Is a Bigger Genetic Code Better? Get Ready to Find Out
Computational experiments, including ones by Freeland, have compared the resilience of the real genetic code with that of potential alternatives, in which codons were assigned arbitrarily to amino acids. Nature’s genetic code outperformed nearly all of them. “For what we have,” said Chang Liu, a synthetic biologist at the University of California, Irvine, “it’s better than a one-in-a-million code.”

Is This Winter’s Sketchy Snowpack the New Normal?
You might imagine droughts as long periods without rain, but they can also be caused by warm winters and a lack of water in the snowpack—referred to as snow drought—in places that depend on mountain runoff for their water supply and storage. One study from University of California at Irvine, led by [engineering] assistant researcher, Laurie Huning,
