D.M. Haynes Award for Broadening Computer Science Graduate Education
The D.M. Haynes Award for Broadening Participation in Computer Science Graduate Education subsidizes expenses for current and former undergraduate participants of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE); Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); and American Indian Science and Engineering Technology (AISES) for application and test fees for M.S. and Ph.D. programs in computer science fields.
The National Science Foundation has reported that in 2010 Latinos, African Americans and Native Americans as a group were 23 percent of the U.S. population but only 6 percent of the total science and engineering labor force. These three groups are an even smaller proportion of doctoral scientists and engineers in the U.S. than they are of bachelors or master's scientists and engineers. African Americans and Latinos are each at approximately 2 percent, and Native Americans are less than half of 1 percent of doctoral scientists and engineers.
In an effort to encourage and support under-represented students applying to graduate programs in computer science, the D.M. Haynes Award was established and named in honor of the associate professor of History from the School of Humanities and director of university’s ADVANCE Program. Professor Haynes has dedicated his professional career to students pursuing a graduate education. Under his direction, many students have benefitted from his guidance, passion and leadership.
D.M. Haynes Award for Broadening Participation in Computer Science Graduate Education
Subsidizing student applications and test fees for M.A. and Ph.D. programs in computer science fields. Up to $200 toward application and GRE fees. Up to five awards per year.
Eligibility:
- Current and former undergraduate participants of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE); Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); and American Indian Science and Engineering Technology (AISES).
- Participants must be enrolled in the UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences.
Application:
- Include proof of application/test registration, or arrange for direct payment of fees
- Include one-to-two paragraphs explaining why you are eligible for this award and discuss career goals and any personal involvement with activities that promote diversity in computer science fields.
