CEE Professor Has Article Published in Environmental Science & Technology
Stanley B. Grant article featured on cover
Professor Stanley B. Grant, Ph.D., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, had his article entitled “Crossing Turbulent Boundaries: Interfacial Flux in Environmental Flows” featured on the cover of the September 1, 2011 issue of Environmental Science & Technology.
In the article, Grant looks at the current understanding of turbulent boundary layer flows, with particular focus on coherent turbulence and its impact on mass transport across the sediment-water interface in marine and freshwater systems. Advances in the visualization and prediction of turbulence are shedding newlight on mass transfer in the turbulent boundary layer. These discoverieshave important implications for many topics in environmental science andengineering: the transport of earth-warming CO2 across the sea-airinterface; nutrient processing and sediment erosion in rivers, lakes andthe ocean; and pollutant removal in water and wastewater treatment systems.
In addition to his appointments in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, Grant is also a visiting chair of hydrology and water resources in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Melbourne. He received his B.S with distinction in geology from Stanford University in 1985; and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Science (with a minor in Applied Biology) in 1989 and 1992, respectively, from the California Institute of Technology. His professional interests include coastal water quality, environmental dispersion of pathogens, and fate and transport modeling.
Grant served on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board (Drinking Water Panel, Science and Technological Achievement Awards Panel) from 2000 to 2009 and is a frequent reviewer and panelist for research journals and funding agencies.
