So, what is Materials Science?
Welcome to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. We are an interdisciplinary and enthusiastic group of faculty and staff who are firmly committed to the success of our students and programs. Created as a new department in 2018, MSE houses our well-established ABET-accredited B.S. in materials science and engineering, as well as a minor available to other undergraduate majors. We also offer a doctoral program in MSE and three options for master’s degrees: a thesis option and a comprehensive exam option, both of which are M.S.
Welcome to the NewsCenter for The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. This site is designed to help journalists learn about our faculty, staff, students and research.
Even before that 2018 demonstration, Microsoft had been looking at ways to use fuel cells.
Brett Sanders, UCI engineering professor said, “We need to better map—and communicate—flood risks, accounting for all the factors that could trigger flooding, including rainfall, streamflow, high tides and waves along the coast, and infrastructure failures. We should also talk about pre-disaster planning for post-disaster action. Do cities have a restoration plan for the day after the flood—one that aligns with community values and aspirations?
Typically, scientists use animals to study humans, but researchers at the University of California, Irvine reversed the system in their newest research. At the American Chemical Society 2023 meeting, researchers detailed how they used human cells to better understand squid camouflage. … “We had this crazy idea to see whether we could capture some aspect of the ability of squid skin tissues to change transparency within human cell cultures,” said PI [and Associate Professor] Alon Gorodetsky, whose research group has been working on materials inspired by squid.
