According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a 60% probability of an >6.0 earthquake rupturing on the San Andreas Fault or Newport – Englewood Fault in Southern California (Orange County) within the next 22 years. There are also other possible disasters that could occur such as conflagrations, flooding, hazardous material spills, derailments, transportation accidents, civil disturbances, terrorism orwar.
Human cells genetically engineered to vary their transparency by making a squid protein could one day lead to see-through tissue. … “That’s the crazy, far-out idea,” says Alon Gorodetsky at the University of California, Irvine. “But when you see squid doing it, then you think it’s not so far-out after all.” Read More
Hot off the heels of Blumhouse Productions’ The Invisible Man movie, scientists at the University of California, Irvine have published a paper describing work that could make such a thing possible in real life. Maybe. And it’s all thanks to a helpful assist from a very specific squid protein. Read More
The Biomedical Engineering graduate program at the University of California at Irvine is in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and closely affiliated with the College of Medicine, School of Biological Sciences, and School of Physical Sciences. The program started in 1998 with the launch of the Center for Biomedical Engineering facilitated by a multi-million dollar Development Award from the Whitaker Foundation. There are currently 20 full-time faculty in the program and 61 joint appointments from the various schools listed above. Our research has core technologies in micro/nano medicine, biophotonics, biocomputation, and tissue engineering. The clinical emphases are neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and ophthalmology.
Online application for Fall 2024 is available starting October 2, 2023 and will be open until January 31, 2024. Apply here.
“For millennia, people have been fascinated by transparency and invisibility, which have inspired philosophical speculation, works of science fiction, and much academic research,” Atrouli Chatterjee, lead study author and doctoral student in chemical and biomolecular engineering at UCI, explained in a statement.
Historically, the field of chemical engineering has had a long and rich tradition as one of the core engineering disciplines, built on a solid foundation in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. However, with the maturity of the chemical process industry, chemical engineering is no longer concerned only with flow in pipes, solution chemistry, chemical reactions, and unit operations. Instead, the past decade has seen a revolution in the field, characterized primarily by an increased interest in applying chemical engineering tools and analytical skills to study highly-interdisciplinary problems involving complex systems (e.g., in biotechnology and biological systems) and molecular-level phenomena (e.g., in microtechnology and nanotechnology). Since its inception in 2019, UC Irvine's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has directed its attention on cutting-edge problems beyond the scope of traditional chemical engineering, a trend now mirrored in most major academic institutions around the world.

The department offers M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in civil and environmental engineering. Faculty members have interest and research expertise in four primary areas: hydrology and water resources systems; structures, geotechnics and materials; transportation systems and environmental and energy systems. Each area has unique degree requirements detailed in the CEE Graduate Handbook.
