Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering

Please attend a Town Hall meeting to learn about the facility changes and space redistribution occurring at the Samueli School of Engineering. In order to provide students and faculty with innovative teaching and research facilities, the school is implementing these changes, which will come in two phases:

Phase 1
Over the past three years, we have been creating a more experiential teaching and learning environment in Engineering Tower (ET) and Calit2. The establishment of RapidTech (fourth floor ET) gives any student the ability to create prototypes using innovative technologies like 3-D printing. FabWorks in Calit2 is a do-it-yourself facility that allows students to make anything they can imagine. Coupled with new lab facilities on the third and fourth floors of ET, students will have modern lab capabilities better than we ever have had here at UCI.

Starting this quarter and over the next two quarters, we will transform the existing classroom spaces on the second floor (entry level) of Engineering Tower and Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) into computer labs and innovative student work/study spaces. Not only does the total square footage exceed what we have today, but the usability and 24-hour access will be unlike anything we have seen.

In 2012 we started the wireless initiative in which every student was required to go mobile. Over the next two quarters, we will be adding wifi to the plaza area.

Phase 2
By the end of summer, we will establish the Irvine Materials Research Institute (first floor of Engineering Hall), which will house a number of transmission electron microscopes including one microscope with the highest structural resolution in the world.

Our Challenge
Once completed we will have fabulous facilities for students and faculty. The challenge lies in enduring the disruption that will persist through the end of the winter quarter. The computing labs in EH 1131, 1141, 1150, and 1151 will be offline. We have established computer facilities that will be deployed in the interim, but they will not be as convenient as what we are losing.

Come out and hear the complete plan at the Town Hall meeting Tuesday Jan. 12, 2016, from 6-7 p.m., in DBH (Donald Bren Hall) 6011. Food and drink will be provided.
