Dr. Harry Skinner is trained as a general orthopedist with a subspecialty interest in joint replacement. As such, his clinical interests are primarily in reconstructive surgery of joints, especially the hip and knee, but also joints in the upper extremity. His expertise in biomechanics and biomaterials, derived from his research and doctoral training in Materials Science and post-doctoral training in Bioengineering, complements these interests. Additionally, he has an interest in the treatment of trauma.

Dr. Skinner is conducting studies in several areas. Finite element stress analysis to study bone remodeling, osteoporosis, and effects of internal prostheses on bone is one of his main interests. These studies are directed toward understanding the effect of stress on bone remodeling and pain in a quantitative sense. Pain management after surgery is one of his clinical interests, with the goal of improving the comfort of the postoperative patient throughout the rehabilitation process after major joint replacement. In addition, gait analysis studies have focused on amputee research including gait initiation, mechanical energy consumption, as well as metabolic energy consumption. Other amputee research interests are the attachment and control of external prostheses. His work applies primarily to the lower extremity.
