De Flaviis is interested in the development of wireless communications devices and systems.

His research focuses on the integration of novel materials and technologies in electromagnetic circuits and antenna systems for the realization of "smart wireless communication systems." He is also focused on research into novel numerical techniques that enable faster codes for the analysis and design of microwave circuits and antennas.

Current research is focused on the synthesis and numerical analysis of novel low-loss ferro-electric material operating at microwave frequency that can be used for phase shifters design to be employed in scan-beam antenna systems. De Flaviis is also working on modeling and fabrication of MEMS devices to be used as tunable elements in microwave circuits, for the realization of tunable filters, tunable phase shifters, discrete switches, and "smart" antenna systems.

A long-term goal of his research is the integration of microwave systems on a single, multifunctional chip, which will include receiving and transmitting stages mixers and baseband signal processing, as well as an antenna or multiple-antenna system.

De Flaviis is director of the High Frequency Electronics laboratory at UCI.
