The Jan Scherfig Scholarship

Scholarship opportunity for
Civil and Environmental Engineering Majors

for 1st year Freshmen

$2000

Apply by May 23, 2005

This scholarship was established in recognition of Dr. Jan Scherfig, Professor Emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UCI. The scholarship, sponsored by the UCI CEE Affiliates, is awarded based on academic merit and career goals, not on financial need.

This year there will be TWO awards of $2,000.00 given out.

Eligibility Requirements:

The applicant must:

  1. Be a first year freshman Civil or Environmental Engineering major enrolled full time in the 2004-2005 academic year and having completed or be currently enrolled in first year math, science, and engineering courses required by the degree program;
  2. Be continuing as a CEE major as a sophomore at UCI with intent to complete a BS in civil and/or environmental engineering; and
  3. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 through the Winter 2005 quarter.

Application Procedure:

The applicant must submit the following materials to Lorrie Aguirre in the CEE office (4130 Engineering Gateway) by May 23, 2005:

  • A brief essay addressing your educational and career goals in civil and/or environmental engineering, including why you chose UCI, your plans for graduate school, and how your freshman course experiences have influenced these goals.
  • A UCI transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable) current through the Winter 2005 quarter.
  • A current resume.

Selection Procedure:

All applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of departmental faculty and affiliates. This year, two recipients will be identified and will receive $2,000 each; multiple awardees may share the scholarship (in the event that no qualified applicants are identified, the scholarship will not be awarded in the current year). The recipients will also be recognized at a quarterly CEE Affiliates meeting to be held in the Fall of 2005 (scholarship recipients are required to attend this ceremony).
