Samueli School Graduate Program Improves in Rankings

U.S. News & World Report’s graduate school rankings placed the Samueli School 21st among public engineering programs.March 20, 2018 – UC Irvine’s Samueli School of Engineering placed 21st among public engineering graduate programs and 35th overall in U.S. News & World Report’s graduate school rankings, published today. This is a two spot increase from last year’s 37th position. U.S. News ranks public and private graduate programs based on national reputation and the quality of students and faculty.

Gregory Washington, the Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering, is gratified to see the Samueli School continue to improve and perform well among the country’s best engineering schools. “Given our consistent investment in new faculty, programs and infrastructure, I see us on a steady upward trajectory,” he said.

The Samueli School enrolls nearly 1,000 graduate students in 13 graduate degree programs. With the largest and most diverse cohort of faculty in its history, the school welcomed 16 new engineers in the past two years. The school’s faculty and students pursue research that addresses the grand challenges facing society and works toward a globally sustainable future. Under Washington’s leadership, the school’s research expenditures have risen to more than $92 million.

Each year, U.S. News surveys graduate programs in the areas of business, education, engineering, law and medicine. This year, 199 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees responded to the survey. The rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.
