Tromberg Awarded 2018 Mentor of the Year

Bruce TrombergFeb. 28, 2018 - The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science has recognized Bruce Tromberg as its 2018 Mentor of the Year. This award is given to an exceptional UC Irvine faculty member who shows an outstanding commitment to mentoring, advising and support of clinical and translational science research.

Tromberg, a professor with joint appointments in biomedical engineering and surgery, is director of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic. A member of the UCI faculty since 1990, he has pioneered the development, clinical translation and commercialization of biophotonics technologies for medical imaging, sensing and image-guided therapy. Tromberg has more than 400 publications and 18 patents, and is co-founder or adviser for six startup companies in the field of biophotonics and biomedical optics. The principal investigator of the Laser Microbeam and Medical Program, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomedical Technology Center, he also is a member of an NIH Advisory Council. He has received several awards, including the Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award from The Optical Society (OSA) and the Directors Award from the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and is a fellow of OSA, SPIE and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers.

Tromberg will be honored at the 10th Annual ICTS Awards Dinner, “People Who Make a Difference in Human Health,” Friday, May 4, at Applied Innovation.
