Professor Elghobashi Receives Research Award

Said Elghobashi

April 19, 2016 - UC Irvine Distinguished Professor Said Elghobashi will receive the Senior Award at the 9th International Conference on Multiphase Flows (ICMF), to be held May 22-27, 2016 in Florence, Italy.

Presented every three years at the conference, the award recognizes an individual's significant scientific/technical contributions to the field of multiphase flow research, as well as outstanding leadership in promoting scholarship, research, development and education in this field.

A National Academy of Engineering member, Elghobashi has worked in computational fluid dynamics for more than four decades and has made pioneering contributions to the field. He was one of the first researchers to apply direct numerical simulation (DNS) to turbulent multiphase flows, and his work has laid the foundation and improved the understanding and numerical modeling of particle-laden turbulent flows. In his work, Elghobashi uses detailed methods based on the most powerful computational capability available. This approach can be applied to understanding the dispersion of particles and droplets in the atmosphere, fuel spray in combustion engines, the bubbly flow in boat wakes and the contrails of aircraft to name just a few examples.

“It is nice to know that experts in my field of research appreciate my contributions,” said Elghobashi. He will be honored with a special session at the international conference at which he will deliver a lecture.

“I look forward to presenting you this well-deserved recognition of your contributions to the field of multiphase flows, in Florence,” wrote Rodney Fox, chair of the ICMF award committee and Anson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering at Iowa State University, in an email to Elghobashi.
