Tromberg Elected OSA Fellow

Bruce TrombergDec. 21, 2015 - Bruce Tromberg, UC Irvine biomedical engineering professor and Beckman Laser Institute director, has been elected a Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA), a nearly 100-year-old international association of optics and photonics scientists, engineers and business leaders.

One of 77 newly elected 2016 Fellows, Tromberg was recognized for “serving as an advocate for and a leader of the biophotonics community as well as for pioneering the development and clinical application of spatially and temporally modulated light imaging.”

Fellowship honors are limited to 10 percent of the organization’s total membership, and are based on members’ contributions to the field, optics-related publications and patents, leadership, and service. Reflecting OSA’s international influence, 60 percent of this year’s Fellows reside outside the United States.

UCI biomedical engineering department chairperson Abe Lee lauded Tromberg’s accomplishment, calling him “a pioneer in biophotonics through the continuous development of advanced technologies in diffuse optical spectroscopy and multi-modal imaging.”

Added Lee: “The Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic under his leadership is one of the world’s premier centers in marrying laser capabilities with clinical diagnostics and treatments. Professor Tromberg’s research addresses clinical problems in cancer, vascular disease, neuroscience and critical care.”
