Congratulations Class of 2013!

2013 CommencementThe Henry Samueli School of Engineering sent 571 new engineers out into the world this past weekend, after a full slate of graduation activities.

Students and their family and friends attended a graduation celebration Friday that included a display of senior design projects and a ceremony in which students pledged the Order of the Engineer. The Commencement Ceremony on Saturday was shared with the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and Roger Andelin, a UC Irvine alumnus and president and chief technology officer of Rakuten.com Shopping, was the featured speaker. Student speaker Sean Thomas Burke, who was graduating with degrees from both schools (electrical engineering and business information management), said this to his fellow graduates:

“Entrepreneurship and collaboration are necessary to solve larger problems.  And it is the inspired individual, the leader, who starts the movement.  We all have the potential to be leaders.  No one is born a leader.  Instead we make the conscious decision to be a leader.2013 Commencement

“Fellow engineers and computer scientists, we must learn to collaborate to solve problems and we must choose to be leaders in our everyday life.

“Today, we are engineers, we are computer scientists, we are leaders, we are entrepreneurs, and we are proud graduates of the University of California, Irvine. Congratulations, Class of 2013!”
