Tau Beta Pi Honor Society Initiates New Members

The UC Irvine Tau Beta Pi Chapter, which has around 300 total members, has initiated 41 new members. Tau Beta Pi is a national honor society open to all engineering disciplines and is the oldest and largest honor society at the Samueli School.

Students must complete an initiation process by meeting a set of requirements and demonstrating commitment to the organization before becoming official members.  An initiate must be in the top 8 percent of their junior class or top 5 percent of their senior class, and display exemplary character and integrity.

“As an honor society on campus, we embrace TBP's motto ‘Integrity and Excellence in Engineering’,” says current chapter president, Chau Diep. “Our goal is to provide an opportunity for engineering students to obtain skills that will assist them in their future careers.”

Members engage in community service, help with fundraising, and attend social events. The chapter plans professional development workshops, liberal arts events and social/networking events designed to build a sense of community among engineering studentsand to help them become well-rounded engineers.

Additionally, during the summer, the UCI chapter organizes an outreach program to help economically disadvantaged high school students gain insight into the STEM careers of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The Tau Beta Pi Association was founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to mark those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.
