CEE Graduate Student Awarded International Desalination Association Scholarship
Errol Glenn one of two recipients internationally
Errol M. Glenn, a civil and environmental engineering graduate student in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, has been selected as one of two recipients world-wide of the International Desalination Association (IDA) Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship.
Glenn, a 2010 recipient of the Newkirk Center for Science and Society Fellowship, has worked in the Applied Environmental Microbiology Laboratory with Professor Sunny Jiang, Ph.D., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), since the summer of 2010. His current research focuses on developing the next generation of seawater desalination antifouling devices.
Prior to enrolling at UC Irvine, Glenn was a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard (USCG) where he served numerous tours throughout the United States; most notably as a Federal Maritime Law Enforcement Officer with the USCG Marine Inspections Department in Los Angeles, as a national technical advisor for the USCG Marine Safety Center in Washington, D.C. and as an engineering physicist at the USCG Research & Development Center in Groton, Conn. His individual military honors include two Coast Guard Achievement Medals and two Coast Guard Commandants Letter of Commendation Ribbons. He also received several awards as a member of his teams and units, including the Coast Guard Presidential Unit Citation, the Coast Guard Unit Commendation, the Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, two Meritorious Team Commendationsand the National Defense Service Medal. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy and his M.S. in mechanical engineering at the United States Naval Postgraduate School.
The Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship encourages engineers and scientists to further their education in subjects related to desalination and water re-use. The scholarship provides financial assistance to graduate students who have been accepted into a graduate program of doctoral studies and who intend to pursue a desalination and water re-use related research thesis.
