Maria Feng Receives Best Paper Award from European Conference on Antennas and Propagation
Chancellor's Professor Maria Q. Feng, Ph.D., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, co-authored a paper that was awarded the Best Antenna Measurement Paper Award at the 5th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation held in Rome, Italy, in April 2011. The paper entitled "Microwave Non-Destructive Evaluation of Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete Structures" was co-authored by Gemma Roqueta and her advisor Luis Jofre from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Roqueta was a visiting graduate student at UC Irvine for several months working with Professor Feng on this topic.
Feng is the founding director of the Center for Advanced Monitoring and Damage Detection at UC Irvine. With a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo, Feng joined The Henry Samueli School of Engineering in 1992. Her research interests are primarily in safety and security of civil infrastructure systems and military armor protective systems, focusing on innovative and interdisciplinary science and technology for sensors, health monitoring and damage assessment. Feng has published nearly 350 journal and conference proceeding papers on these subjects.
Feng, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, has received numerous awards and honors including a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation; the Alfred Noble Prize jointly from the combined engineering societies of the United States; the Collingwood Prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); the Charles Pankow Finalist Award for Innovation by ASCE - Civil Engineering Research Foundation; the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize by ASCE; the Best Paper Award and the Best Presentation Award by Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, Japan; The Fariborz Maseeh Outstanding Faculty Research Award from The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Distinguished Mid-Career Faculty Award for Research by UC Irvine.
