Long-Time Staff Bid Farewell to Samueli School

Five staff members to retire in June

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine will say good-bye to five long-time staff members this summer as they retire at the end of June.  Janice M. Holstein, Rachel L. Maus, Marilyn E. Armentrout, Peter C. Bucklin, and Robin C. Alward are all leaving the Samueli School after a combined 133 years of service to the University of California.

Holstein, assistant dean for planning and administration, and Armentrout, the academic personnel manager for the Samueli School, have both served the UC system since 1981.  Bucklin, administrative computing manager, joined the university in 1987, while Maus, the Samueli School’s director of finance, came on-board in 1989.  Alward, an undergraduate student affairs counselor, was at the university long before any of her colleagues – she has worked at the university since 1969.

Additionally, Holstein was given the “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Engineering Administration” award at the Samueli School’s annual dinner and awards banquet on May 19, 2008, following the seventh annual “California:  Prosperity Through Technology” Industry Research Symposium.  She was recognized for her “Excellence as an Administrator at UCLA (1981-95), UC San Diego (1995-97), and UC Irvine (1997-2008), and Outstanding Contributions to All Areas of Engineering Education as the Assistant Dean for Planning and Administration in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering.  Her Guidance of Students, Staff, and Faculty Has Been Truly Exemplary.”

“I am proud and honored to have worked with such outstanding colleagues at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering,” said Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos, dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering.  “Their years of dedication and service to the University of California and the Samueli School are a remarkable achievement.  They have been the foundation of our administrative success in serving our students, faculty and the university at large.  They will be greatly missed, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
