UC Irvine Engineering Jumps Rank on 2008 U.S.News and World Report Best Colleges List
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering advanced its standing among the country’s best engineering schools, placing 37th on the 2008 U.S.News and World Report’s annual rankings of the nation's leading public and private universities. The
The School's specialty areas also ranked in the top 50, including aerospace/aeronautical (28), biomedical (37), civil (41), computer engineering (37), electrical (43), environmental (33), materials (46) and mechanical (38). The 2008 ranking is based on surveys of more than 1,200 programs and some 12,500 academics and professionals that were conducted in fall 2006.
“We are pleased with the latest rankings, and I believe they directly reflect the collaborative effort of our outstanding faculty, staff, and students, who are actively propelling research and advancements in engineering science.” said Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos, dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. “I believe the foundation of our School, as established by my predecessors and by our activities over the past few years, are now solid for a rise to the top twenty best engineering schools in the nation in the future.”
Each year, U.S.News ranks professional-school programs in business, education, engineering, law and medicine. Other programs are ranked only periodically. Rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty. The information is published in the 2008 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook, which is available at newsstands and bookstores.
