Materials Science Researchers, Students Take Honors at Conference

Researchers and students affiliated with the Materials Science Characterization Center (MC2), housed in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, won three awards at the annual meeting of the Microscopy Society of America, held in San Antonio this month.

Wen-An Chiou, director of MC2, along with Reginald Penner and Qiguang Li, both from the UCI Department of Chemistry, won the Traveling Poster Exhibit Award for "Electron Microscopy Study of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanowires." Their poster was one of only five selected out of 200 submitted in the "physical" category.

Chiou, along with colleagues Benjamin Wu and Yu-Fen Chou, both from UCLA, also received two awards for the poster "Formation of Plate-Like Apatite Coatings on Polymer Surface." The poster won the MSA Student Poster Award and the Traveling Poster Exhibit Award in the "biological" category. Although Wu and Chou hail from the biomedical engineering program at UCLA, they conduct their electron microscopy research at MC2.
