ZEV•NET Wins Another Transportation Award

ZEV•NET Program Recognized for Transportation Innovation and Excellence With Blue Sky Merit Award™

Irvine, Calif., November 7, 2002 — ZEV•NET won a Blue Sky Merit Award™, marking the second time this year that the shared use, station car program has been lauded for its efforts to address two major challenges facing Southern California, transportation congestion and air quality.

ZEV•NET was one of four organizations chosen this year for a Blue Sky Merit Award™, which recognizes outstanding marketplace contributions to advanced, sustainable transportation. The award was presented today at the Skirball Cultural Center in West Los Angeles by WestStart-CALSTART, an advanced transportation technologies consortium based in Pasadena, Calif. Other 2002 Blue Sky Merit Award™ winners are American Honda, Norcal Waste Systems and the Los Angeles County MTA and City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

ZEV•NET (Zero Emission Vehicle•Network Enabled Transport) combines rail and zero- and low-emission vehicles in a far-reaching initiative led by UCI's National Fuel Cell Research Center and Institute of Transportation Studies, both affiliated with The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Partners also include the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, the City of Irvine, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and The Irvine Company. The goal of the pilot program is to use today's emerging technologies--low and zero-emission vehicles, stationary fuel cells, advanced communication and global positioning technologies and the Internet--to solve complex problems like traffic congestion, air pollution and oil dependency.

In September, ZEV•NET won the 2002 Transportation Excellence Award from the Orange County Transportation Authority. For more information about ZEV•NET, go to www.zevnet.org.
