At the time of the exam, you will need to bring the Comp Exam Report form.

PhD Preliminary Examination

The preliminary exam is an important milestone for entering the PhD program. Students can find out more information and register for the preliminary exam by filling out and submitting the Prelim Exam Nomination form to Amy Fujitani at least 4 weeks prior to examination date. At the time of the exam, you will need to bring the Prelim Exam Report form.

PhD Qualifying Exam

The exam is generally oral and administered by a committee of faculty as outlined by campus policy. The exam is scheduled by the student in accordance with the availability of the participating faculty. During the exam, the student proposes a plan for research.

  • As mentioned above, the first step in setting up your qualifying exam is filling out the Qualifying Committee Nomination Form (found at http://www.eng.uci.edu/grad/current/forms). Please fill out the form with your committee choices, request approval from your faculty advisor, and then submit this form to Graduate Student Affairs at least 2 weeks prior to the exam itself. Once notified of your committee approval, you will proceed with the scheduling of your exam.
  • Once your examination has been completed successfully, you will ask that your committee indicate the results (with their signatures) on the Ph.D. I form (found at http://www.grad.uci.edu/forms/). You will also need to have your faculty advisor sign in the three designated spots and then turn in that form to Graduate Student Affairs. Once the MMT Graduate Advisor and the School's Associate Dean have approved the form, you will be emailed to pick it up, take it to the Cashier to pay the advancement fee, and then to turn it in at the Graduate Division (120 Aldrich Hall).
  • As an aside, if your committee would like to have your student file during the examination, please contact Graduate Student Affairs and one of your members can come pick it up ahead of time or we can bring it over to your exam.
