Air Force Awards $4 Million Research...
In recent years, researchers at UC Irvine and other institutions have studied the molecular mechanisms by which microbes survive in hyper-arid desert environments by taking mineral nutrients and water from rocks. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has awarded a UCI materials science team $4 million for a three-year project to perfect the use of microscopic life-forms in the extraction of rare earth elements and as productive components in additive manufacturing systems.
UC Irvine Discovery of ‘Item Memory’...
Researchers from the University of California, Irvine have discovered the neurons responsible for “item memory,” deepening our understanding of how the brain stores and retrieves the details of “what” happened and offering a new target for treating Alzheimer’s disease. Memories include three types of details: spatial, temporal and item, the “where, when and what” of an event.
A Revolutionary Wine Glass in a Gyroscop...
During a stroll down a street in Barcelona’s Poble Espanyol, Andrei Shkel saw a man inflating molten glass with a blowpipe and shaping it into a perfect sphere. As a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Shkel imagined an ingenious application for the ancient art: glassblowing could enable the world to make tiny “wine glasses” for small gyroscopes.
Fei Xia Named a Scialog Fellow
Fei Xia, UC Irvine assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has been selected as a Scialog Fellow by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA). She is one of 50 Scialog Fellows -- outstanding early to mid-career researchers from U.S. academic institutions – who are part of an initiative to develop innovative ideas through research, dialogue and collaboration.
UC Irvine Students Study Effectiveness...
Southern California is confronting a coastal conundrum: There is too little sand at several of the region's beaches, and there is too much sediment clogging inland flood prevention infrastructure. Experts are seeking an efficient and economical way move sand from one place to the other.
From Pancakes to Prototypes: UCI Engineers...
UCI Engineering Plaza was bustling with students and faculty during the 2026 E-Week hosted by the Engineering Student Council (ESC) last week. “E-Week is an annual celebration that takes place during National Engineers Week,” said Marilyn Nguyen, a biomedical engineering student and ESC board member.
Q&A with UCI Society of Women Engineers...
Julia McWilliams is a mechanical engineering senior who was the president of the UC Irvine Society of Women Engineers (SWE) which won Best Mentorship Award of the UCI engineering clubs last year. She is project manager for Anteater Baja Racing and was a standards engineering intern at Southern California Edison.
