UC Irvine-led Study Achieves Brain-controlled...

April 16, 2026

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, Caltech and Keck School of Medicine of USC have developed a bidirectional brain-computer interface that allows a person to control a robotic walking exoskeleton using brain signals and receive artificial leg sensation through direct electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. The project is the first implementation of a BDBCI for walking that incorporates bilateral interhemispheric leg sensorimotor brain areas and represents a critical step toward restoring full ambulatory function in individuals living with spinal cord injury and paraplegia.

Preventing Epilepsy Progression and...

March 16, 2026

Most people associate epilepsy with seizures, but what many don’t realize is that the abnormal brain activity patterns associated with epilepsy can also negatively impact the brain, affecting memory, communication and learning. As an associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology in the UC Irvine School of Medicine and a board-certified child neurologist at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), Jennifer Gelinas, MD, PhD, understands how epileptic activity can disrupt intellectual development.

Grosberg Creates Way to Research Sex-based...

February 13, 2026

Anna Grosberg, UCI professor of biomedical engineering, and Ph.D. student Mary Tran have made the first characterization of the difference between male and female neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs) in vitro tissues. Their work was just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and offers a way to study sex-based variations in cardiac tissues and function.
