One of the most pressing concerns in Southern California currently is the increased risk of wildfire due to climate change. The UC Irvine Climate Collaboration brings together researchers in civil and environmental engineering, Earth system science, ecology and evolutionary biology, and other departments to study fires from all angles. The goal is to provide local and state government agencies, community organizations, businesses and property owners precise information that they can use to mitigate disaster risk. April 16, 2026

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, Caltech and Keck School of Medicine of USC have developed a bidirectional brain-computer interface that allows a person to control a robotic walking exoskeleton using brain signals and receive artificial leg sensation through direct electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. The project is the first implementation of a BDBCI for walking that incorporates bilateral interhemispheric leg sensorimotor brain areas and represents a critical step toward restoring full ambulatory function in individuals living with spinal cord injury and paraplegia.
