Forget single genes: CRISPR now cuts and splices whole chromosomes
These issues can be a deal-breaker when biologists want to make hundreds or thousands of changes to an organism's genome, says Chang Liu, a synthetic biologist at the University of California, Irvine. … “Now, I can make a series of changes in one segment and then another and combine them together. That's a big deal,” Liu says. The new tools will bolster industrial biotechnology by making it easier to vary the levels of proteins that microbes make, Liu and others say.

Financial Aid on Campus
Lack of funds need not be a barrier to attend UCI; over 60% of UCI's enrolled students receive some form of financial aid. Students who demonstrate that they need financial assistance in order to attend may be eligible for scholarships, grants, loans, and/or work-study awards through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. In addition to awarding aid on the basis of financial need, some scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence.

Fri 8 AM | Researchers Confirm Increasing Intensity Of California Fire Seasons
If you've been thinking every fire season seems more intense than the last, you are correct--at least for California. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine pulled in data from the last 100 years, and found some clear trends. For one thing, every year of the 21st century has featured an increase in fire destruction over the previous year. For another, the center of fire season has shifted earlier; it's now in July instead of August.

Facts & Figures
The biomedical engineering department’s growth in the Samueli School has been rapid. The department merges UCI’s strengths in medicine, biological sciences and engineering. BME faculty are competitive in garnering extramural grants, with expenditures topping $30M on an annual basis. Strong ties with many of Orange County’s more than 300 biomedical device and biotech companies provide students and faculty with distinct opportunities to solve contemporary medical challenges.
