Postdoctoral Fellow in Neural Signal Processing
The UC Irvine Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has an opening in the Sanger Lab. The department is seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral fellow for a project in neural signal processing. The project includes the analysis of multichannel invasive electrode recordings from children with movement disorders during awake natural behavior. Datasets include local field potentials from depth electrodes in subcortical structures, surface EMG, scalp EEG, video and accelerometry. The goal is to understand the central neural origins of movement disorders including dystonia, chorea, tremor and tics in children. The project also includes the application of similar methods to data obtained from microelectrode recordings in frog spinal cord during lower extremity natural movements.
We seek candidates with experience in advanced statistical signal processing techniques, including spike detection, point process and continuous time series methods, system identification and estimation, causality measures, cross-coherence, spectrogram, pattern matching and mutual information methods. Familiarity with probability theory, stochastic processes and information transmission is essential. Knowledge of particle filters, partial differential equation methods and stochastic control is a plus. We expect that development of new analytic methods for cross-modal multichannel analysis will be necessary. We prefer candidates with experience using these techniques for analysis of neurophysiological data. Candidates should have a strong background in the use of Matlab for statistical signal processing, and familiarity with R or Splus and neuroanalysis packages such as Chronux would be helpful.
The position is available immediately, ongoing funding is available, and we request candidates who can commit to this project for a minimum of two years. The initial appointment will be for 12 months and salary depends on the applicant’s qualifications. Renewal of the appointment will be contingent upon the availability of adequate funding and performance.
