Assistant Professor in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level with a target start date of July 1, 2022. We seek candidates interested in building a strong, dynamic and diverse research group in synthetic biology. Applicants focusing on any area of synthetic biology, broadly defined, will be fully considered. Areas of particular interest include protein, metabolic, genetic and microbiome engineering; directed evolution; regulatory network design; computational protein design; and machine learning. Candidates interested in establishing experimental, computational or hybrid research programs are welcome. Candidates should be committed to teaching chemical and biomolecular engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and must hold a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a related field. Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
UC Irvine, established in 1965, is ranked among the nation’s best research institutes with over $590 million in yearly funding and is well regarded for its highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture. The successful applicant will likely engage with groups both within and outside of chemical and biomolecular engineering. For example, synthetic biology is well represented in the departments of chemical and biomolecular engineering, biomedical engineering, chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences. UC Irvine is also home to a new Center for Synthetic Biology. We expect the successful candidate will contribute to the vision and development of this growing center.
Applications require a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including a publication list, a concise statement of proposed research, and a teaching statement. A separate statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion must also be included in the application materials. Applicants should arrange for a minimum of three letters of recommendation to be submitted on their behalf. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in university programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidates finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the university’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.
