Foothill wins Vital Link electric race car competition at UC Irvine
High school students saw their ideas hit the pavement Saturday morning at UC Irvine. The annual Vital Link Energy Invitational took place at a parking lot on campus, with 11 high school teams racing their self-built electric cars in four heats. Two different teams from Foothill High placed first and third in the contest, which judged cars based on their efficiency using the following formula: 10 million, divided by (watt hours times total seconds).

The fee can be waived for qualified domestic applicants only. Fee waiver information can be found on Graduate Division's website here.
Note that the application fee is paid to UCI's Graduate Divison and the department has no authority to waive the fee.

These issues can be a deal-breaker when biologists want to make hundreds or thousands of changes to an organism's genome, says Chang Liu, a synthetic biologist at the University of California, Irvine. … “Now, I can make a series of changes in one segment and then another and combine them together. That's a big deal,” Liu says. The new tools will bolster industrial biotechnology by making it easier to vary the levels of proteins that microbes make, Liu and others say.

Fri 8 AM | Researchers Confirm Increasing Intensity Of California Fire Seasons
If you've been thinking every fire season seems more intense than the last, you are correct--at least for California. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine pulled in data from the last 100 years, and found some clear trends. For one thing, every year of the 21st century has featured an increase in fire destruction over the previous year. For another, the center of fire season has shifted earlier; it's now in July instead of August.

Founder of UCI Beckman Laser Institute Dies
UCI said biomedical laser researcher and professor Michael Berns, who founded the university’s Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic, died on Aug. 13. He was 79. … Berns was known for his innovative work using “laser scissors and tweezers” to manipulate cells, university officials said. He was the first person to perform subcellular surgery on chromosomes and helped pioneer laser nanosurgery, according to SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.
