An Orange County coastal town grapples with losing its beach
The shoreline from San Clemente to Dana Point is a microcosm of what issues can arise when the beach disappears from a “beach town” – and how much is at stake for coastal communities when their sand disappears.

Apodaca: Recognizing Orange County warriors in the fight against climate change
Take Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering. Sanders is an expert in water, specifically flooding and erosion. One of the projects his team at UCI has been working on is to develop new models to estimate how well infrastructure can withstand compounding hazards of successive fire and flooding events — crucial information given the increasing size and recurrence of such calamities.

Asm. Petrie-Norris Asks Governor to Sign Sea-Level Rise Bill
Two UC Irvine scientists, Dr. Kathleen Treseder and Dr. Brett Sanders, spoke at the event about the need for the bill (click here for our recent story on Treseder’s research on the link between climate change and Valley fever; click here for our extensive look at how sea-level rise will affect Orange County’s coastline, which relied heavily on Sanders’s research).

After protests, SoCalGas scales back plans to test hydrogen energy at UC Irvine
UC Irvine ended up on the front line of this debate because it is home to the National Fuel Cell Research Center, which has been testing hydrogen for years. The center is led by Jack Brouwer, an engineering professor at UCI who has studied hydrogen for 25 years. Brouwer’s team has worked with SoCalGas on other projects. So he said previously that this next test seemed a natural fit after the CPUC asked gas companies back in 2019 to help develop standards for safely injecting hydrogen into the statewide natural gas system.

Accelerated Status Program
Exceptionally promising UCI undergraduate Engineering students with a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA may, during their junior or senior year, may apply for streamlined admission into an M.S. program within The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Streamlined admission would allow a student to petition for exemption from UCI's GRE requirement for graduate school admission. This exception applies only to current UCI undergraduate engineering students applying for admission to one of the M.S. programs in the UCI Henry Samueli School of Engineering and who are applying for graduate school the Fall quarter immediately after completing their undergraduate studies.

A California rocket-maker will start producing simple ventilators
“This one is going to basically be for all the patients who need a ventilator but do not need a top-line ventilator,” Dr. Govind Rajan, the director of clinical affairs at the UC Irvine Medical Center, says. “That will free up all these top-line ventilators for the sickest of the sick.” … Just over a week ago, he and a team including Brian J.F. Wong, a UCI plastic surgeon who works in medical device development, and Thomas Milner, a University of Texas, Austin, biomedical engineer, kickstarted the the Bridge Ventilator Consortium.
