Abstract: This seminar will introduce the concepts of both connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles and describe the vision for the merging of both aspects into connected automated vehicles (CAV). Following a brief introduction, the seminar will describe a series of national coalitions, working groups and initiatives that are advancing CAV at the state and local levels. Emphasis will be placed on the SPaT challenge – an AASHTO resolution to challenge state and local infrastructure owners and operators to deploy approximately 20 dedicated short range communications-based signal phase and timing (SPaT) broadcasts at signalized intersections in every state by 2020.
