The European ARTEMIS Initiative to Develop a Generic Cross-Domain Architecture

EECS Colloquium

Featuring Hermann Kopetz, Ph.D.
Professor, Computer Science and Engineering
Technical University of Vienna

Location:  McDonnell Douglas Engineering Auditorium
Free and open to the public

Abstract:
Under the guidance of the European Commission, many of the major European embedded systems companies and some research organizations and universities combined efforts to establish the ARTEMIS (Advanced Research& Technology for Embedded Intelligence and Systems) initiative to develop a cross-domain architecture for embedded systems.  Last year an ARTEMIS Strategic Research Agenda was published listing the constraints and requirements that need to be investigated in order to arrive at such an architecture.   This talk will discuss the contents of the SRA and depict the roadmap to arrive at the envisioned European Embedded System Architecture.

Hermann Kopetz received his PhD in physics "sub auspiciis praesidentis" from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1968. After some years in industry he joined the Technical University of Berlin in 1978 and moved to the Technical University of Vienna in 1982. Dr Kopetz has published a widely used textbook on real-time systems and more than 150 papers on the topic of dependable embedded systems. Dr. Kopetz is a Fellow of the IEEE and a recipient of the IEEE Computer Society 2003 Technical Achievement Award “for outstanding contributions to the field of safety-critical real-time computing.”  In 2006, Dr. Kopetz chaired the ARTEMIS Strategic Research Expert Group on Reference Designs and Architecture.
