Postdoctoral Scholar with Professor Kristen Davis

$49,188 - $51,324

The Coastal Dynamics Laboratory at UC Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the dynamics of nonlinear internal waves. Internal waves play an important role in shaping environmental variability in coastal ecosystems globally.  Nonlinear internal waves drive cross-shelf transport and exchange of heat, nutrients, sediments and pollutants, and have been found to directly influence the thermal resilience and productivity of nearshore ecosystems such as coral reefs and kelp forests. We seek a candidate capable of carrying out a set of field experiments that will help determine the physical processes influencing internal wave evolution, energy distribution and associated turbulent mixing, and cross-shelf exchange.

Qualifications: Organizational and communication skills, creativity in methodological development, and an understanding of basic experimental design and statistical analyses are required for this position. The ability to work in a group setting is essential, as the postdoctoral researcher will work collaboratively with other PIs, post docs, graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, marine science or a related field from an accredited university. The preferred candidate will have experience in fluid dynamics as well as the demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with Professor Kristen Davis ( and her research group.  Initial appointment will be for a 12-month period, renewable subject to performance for another 12 months. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
